Why Visit the Wineries Near Montevideo

Most of Uruguay’s vineyards are in Canelones, the department next to Montevideo, so you can be among the vines in well under an hour. Many wineries here were founded by Italian and Basque immigrant families, and they’re still run by their descendants.

The maritime climate, shaped by the Río de la Plata and the Atlantic, softens Tannat, the country’s signature grape, into a structured but approachable red. Albariño, Merlot and Marselan are well worth tasting too.
