Chile’s Wine Valleys in Depth
Chile’s vineyards stretch along a narrow strip between the Andes and the Pacific. Cold air from the Humboldt Current cools the coastal valleys, while the Andes bring cool nights to the east. The result is a remarkable range of styles within a couple of hours of Santiago.
Maipo Valley
The historic heart of Chilean wine, at the doorstep of Santiago. Alto Maipo, in the foothills around Pirque and Puente Alto, produces Chile’s most famous Cabernet Sauvignon. This is where you’ll find landmark estates such as Concha y Toro and Santa Rita, alongside small family wineries, colonial houses and old cellars.
Casablanca Valley & San Antonio
Between Santiago and the Pacific, morning fog from the ocean keeps Casablanca cool. It’s Chile’s reference for Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and many wineries have excellent restaurants. Nearby, the San Antonio Valley and Leyda, even closer to the sea, make some of the country’s most vibrant whites.
Colchagua Valley
Around the town of Santa Cruz, about two and a half hours south of Santiago, Colchagua is Chile’s premium red wine region. The slopes of Apalta are famous for rich Carménère, Syrah and red blends. With wine lodges, vineyards and a lively wine-country town, it’s worth at least one night.
Aconcagua Valley & Los Andes
North of Santiago, on the way to the Andes border crossing, the Aconcagua Valley produces structured reds, while its coastal side has become known for fresh whites. It combines well with a crossing to Mendoza.

Planning Your Chile Wine Tour
How Far Are the Wine Valleys from Santiago?
The Maipo Valley starts on the edge of Santiago, so you can be tasting within an hour of leaving your hotel. Casablanca sits on the road to Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, about an hour west. The Aconcagua Valley and Los Andes lie to the north, and Colchagua, around Santa Cruz, is the furthest south and best enjoyed with an overnight stay.
When to Go
Chile’s wine country is open year-round. Harvest, from March to April, brings the vineyards to life, while spring and early summer are ideal for long lunches outdoors.
Pair It with the Coast
A Casablanca wine tour combines naturally with an afternoon in Valparaíso, the colorful UNESCO-listed port city, or the beaches of Viña del Mar.
